Abstract This study was carried out to evaluate the pathologic effect of a carbamate pesticide, carbofuran, on the genital organs of adult rams as well as the probable changes in the semen picture and plasma testosterone level. The animals were daily intubated with 4.5 mg carbofuranlKg B.W. (the minimum toxic dose or the highest sublethal dose) up to 56 days (the whole length of a spermatogenic cycle in the ram). Clinically, the intoxicated animals showed salivation, lacrimation, tremors, frequent urination, excitation and anorexia without mortalities. Upon sonographic examinathn, both the testis and epididymides showed hyperechoic areas indicating degenerative changes. Grossly, there wele softness and slight atrophy of the testes besides pulmonary hemorrhages, renal congestion and hepatic paleness. Semen and hormonal evaluation revealed a significant decrease of the ejaculate volume, sperm concentration and motility and the serum testosterone levels during certain periods of the experiment. However, the percentage of the total sperm abnormalities including the acrosornal defects were significantly increased throughout the whole experiment. |
