Abstract

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) is a widespread disease in the developing countries. Several studies were done an the relation between malnutrition and child development.
The aim of the present study was lo assess the neurodeveiopmental functions in infants and children with PCM during the disease and its relation to the serum level of some trace elements (iron, /inc, magnesium and copper).
The study was conducted on 60 infants and children with PCM, the criteria of their diagnosis were based on Wellecom classification. The studied cases included 4 groups; underweight, kwashiorkor, marasmus and marasmic-kwasliiorkor. Fifteen well nourished infants and children, a£e and sex matched, served as a control group. The neurudevclopmental functions were assessed by the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST). The test is designed to assess development in infants and children from birth lo | ft years age; it covers the 4 fields of behaviour (gross motor, fine motor, language and personal-social) r The test results were interpreted as normal, questionable and abnormal.
