Abstract Endothelin is a long lasting vasoconstrictor, it acts as a pressor which has been confirmed in human subject. Recently it was found that the intrarenal vasoconstrictors such as the leukotrienes and endothelins are activated with the progression of the liver disease. The renal vasoconstriction is counterbalanced by the intrarenal hyperproduction of vasodilating prostaglandins and kallikreins. When this balance is lost by any mechanism, the renal vascular resistances dramatically increase and hepatorenaI syndrome develops. The aim of this study is to find the plasma endothelin-I in plasma in cases with chronic liver disease and to know whether it is involved in the prognosis of renal dysfunction present in these conditions. For this purpose (50) cases were grouped as follows: o Group I (20) patients with compensated liver disease. o Group II (20) patients with decompensated liver disease. o (10) normal subjects as control. |
