Akathisia is a frequent and common adverse effect of treatment
with antipsychotic (neuroleptic ) drugs, this syndrome consists of
subjective (feeling of inner restlessness and urge to move) as well as
objective component \ Rocking while standing or sitting, lifting feet as
if marching’ on the spot and crossing and uncrossing the legs while
sitting ). ( Miller and Fleischhacker, 2000 ) and ( Barnes, 1990).
During acute treatment, around 20-25 % of patients will
develop the condition, and in out-patient receiving maintenance drug
treatment, a simi lar prevalence has been reported (Gihb and Lees,
1986)
Akathisia can be particularly distressing and di fficult to
tolerate. This may lead to poor compliance with medication and
contribute to exacerbation 01” the original psychotic illness for which
treatment was prescribed (Van PlICtCII ct al. 197”).
The condition has been also associated with violent, aggressive
behavior (Schutle, 19S5) or impulsive suicidal behavior (Shaw et al
1989).
The di tfcrcntial diaglwsis includes agitation or psychotic
excitement and the ’restless legs’ syndrome (Ekborn, 1960).
To several variants have been described: acute akathisia, which
may prove to be persistent in sonic cases; chronic akathisia, with
emergence or exacerbation in puricnis 011 long-term treatment: and
