Abstract

In Behera province cattle of different ages has been examined forthe presence of Theileria blood parasites infection. Different developmental stages of the parasite were observed.
The incidence of the conducted species during the various seasons has been clearly demonstrated. Out of 200 examined hosts of different ages during the years (1991-1992) only 28% were found infected with Theileria species. (7%) of the cases were infected with Theileria annulata and (2 1%) with Theileria mutans. Thirteen calves under 6 month were negative for any blood parasites.
The infection rate reached its peak in April but completely disappeared in December. Blood films stained with Geimsa showed the parasite in the early stage as tiny small forms non-differentiated of bluish colour. Growing further, the parasite became more active in the red blood corpuscles which could be differentiated into chromatic masses creating around, a clear vacuole in the Haemoglobin (globular form). Then the parasite developed to the comma shape of pink-globular or ovoid nucleus located at the broad end of a faintly sky blue cytoplasm. More development showed it as rings, spindle or rod shaped. The morphological findings showed that the blood parasite detected belong to the Theileria annulata (annularform) and Theileria mutans (oval, round or rod shaped). It was observed that some of the infected cases showed apparently to be in a vely good healthy. This indicated the endemicity of the parasites in Egypt.
