While the volatile oils that were extracted by steam distillation when analyzed by GC/MS showed the presence of citral as the main constituent in addition to linalyl iso-valerate , 6-methy-5hepten-2-one B, undecane , linalool, neric and geranic acid(the oxidized form of citral)and geranyl acetate,farmesol,a-bergamotene,(-)-caryophyllene oxide, neryl propionate in addition to different hydrocarbons, acids and ketones. The non-volatile fraction was extracted in a soxhlet apparatus first using light petroleum, then diethyl ether and finally methanol as successive solvents.
