Abstract

Eighty samples of fresh water fish (50 -ilapia nilotica 30 Cla.rias lazera were collected randomly from fish markets in Assiut city during summer and winter seasons for Salmonella examination 5 portions from each fish (slime, scales gills, muscles of dorsum and tail and the intestine) were subjected to bacteriological examination. Slime, scales as well as gills were the most contaminated sites. While the muscles and intestine were free from Salmonellae. Two Salmonellae serotypes (4%) were isolated; Salmonella typhimurium was from slime and scales, and Salmonella para— typhi (B) was from the gills. from the public health aspect, the two salmonellae serotypes isolated were of most impor— tance, almonella typhimurium had frequently poisni.g outbreaks in Egypt, and Salmonella paratyphi (B) is a well known cause of human paratyphoid. It was noticed that the salmonellae serotypes isolated froth the bigger and heavy wei.ht fishes (20 : 30 cm) but not from the smaller ones. Also Salmonellae isolated from Tilapia nil— otica during summer season where the temperature of water ranged between (26.5 — 29.5 °C) and the temperature of weather ranged between (35.40 00), that high temperature allow the growth and multiplication of the microorganisms. Contamination of the fish with almoaellae my be due to that fish caught from polluted water or a contaminant due
to insufficient hyigenic measures during the different
. steps from netting until reaching the market.
