Abstract

Six different sets (G, H, I, J, K and L) of discontinuous gold films, i.e., two-dimensional island gold films [2D-I(Au)Fs] were prepared by the thermal evaporation technique and deposited on plastic substrates of thickness 0.02 mm “Melinex” at ambient temperature. The small thickness of Melinex enabled us to explore the applicability of using the 2D-IMFs as sensors for temperature and strain. The films of each set were identified by the equivalent film thickness (tf); the six values for tf in nm are 0.5, 1.2, 2.4, 3.5, 5 and 10 respectively. After exposing the 2D-I(Au)Fs to air, their dc resistance was monitored versus time until short term stability was attained. The films were strained by direct stretching of the plastic where for each value of strain the dc film resistance and also the two parallel components (rp and cp) of the equivalent circuit of the film were found. Later on, the films were transferred into a cryostat to vary the film temperature from 100 to 300 K where the dc resistance and both of rp and cp were deduced. Another six sets (A, B, C, D, E and F) of 2D-I(Au)Fs deposited on Corning 7059 glass substrates and having the same tf as in the case of Melinex were also prepared to study the effect of strain, resulting from bending the substrate, on rp and cp.
