Vitiligo is a common acquired melanocytopenic disorder characterized by well circumscribed cutaneous white macules or patches. It can affect all races. It is present in at least 1% of the worid population, vitiligo can occur at any age, mostly below age of 30 years.
Vitiligo may be associated with many autoimmune disorders as thyroid diseases, diabetes mellitus, and psoriasis.
There are various hypotheses for the pathogenesis of vitiligo the most accepted are; the autoimmune, the neurogenic, the self-destructive hypothesis, and Low catalase level in the Keratinocytes.
Vitiligo can be classified into: Localized which may be focal or segmental, Generalized which may be acrofacial, vulgaris, or universal, and Mixed.
In another view vitiligo can be classified into either: type A in which the patches is non dennatomal, it can be active or inactive, or type B in which the patches is dennatomal.
There are different lines of treatment of vitiligo among such measures photochemotherapy with PUVA and phototherapy ixsing narrow band UVB (311 nm) are included.
