Abstract
The present study dealt with the susceptibility and building up of resistance of the neonate pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), laboratory and field colonies, to the two chitin synthesis inhibitors chlorfluazuron (Atabron 5%) and flufenoxuron (Cascade 10%), and the bioinsecticide Bacillus thuringiensis (Xentari). Cross resistance of chlorfluazuron -, and flufenoxuron – resistant strains to certain insecticides as well as reversion of resistance to the two selected compounds was also investigated. The effect of resistance on some biological aspects was determined every five generations during selection.
The activity of chitinase and protease in the laboratory colony and benzoylphenylureas -, and B. thuringiensis – resistant strains were determined. The histological differences between the procuticle of the laboratory colony (untreated individuals) and those of the two strains resistant to the two chitin synthesis inhibitors was inspected using the electron microscope.
