Abstract The aim of the work was to study the association between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis of the knees with varus deformity. Fifty five knees suffering from osteoarthritis with varus deformity in 30 patients comprised this study. The age of the patients ranged between 39.0 to 70.0 years with an average of 54.5 years. There were 26 females and 4 males. Patients suffering from rheumatoid disease, undergone operation, post-traumatic or received local steroid injection were excluded from the present study. The patients were subjected to thorough clinical, laboratory, radiological and densitometry examination to detect genu varum osteoarthritis and related osteoporosis. In radiological investigation several angles were measured in the standing anteroposterior view of the knee. ESR, latex rheumatoid factor, fasting blood sugar and serum uric acid were investigated. The patients suffering from genu varum osteoarthritis of the knee were densitometerized at L1-L4 series and left hip. It was found that there was inverse relationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. |
