Abstract

To reduce the level of metals’ pollution in waters, the present study was carried out, by synthesizing two different materials of low cost of synthesis. These materials are different phases of each of hydroxyaptites and calcium silicate hydrates respectively. The first hydroxyaptites were prepared by precipitation method from reaction of solutions of ammonium phosphate mono-hydrate and calcium nitrate in presence of alkaline medium of NH4OH. Calcium silicate hydrate were prepared by hydrothermal reaction (in autoclave) by mixing stoichiometric amounts of CaO and different sources of silica. The ability of these compounds to remove (uptake) many of the heavy metal ions such as: pb2+, Cd2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+ were studied. from the obtained results it has been found that, both of hydroxyapatite and calcium silicate hydrate compounds have a potential ability to remove heavy and toxic elements from solutions at different capacities. Such capacities depend on the kind of metal, structure and synthesis conditions of the synthesized products.
