Abstract

Family Asteraceae (Cornpositae) is chemically very distinct. It accumulates a wide variety of chemical classes, many of which can be biologically active or serve as chemotaxonomical markers at the different taxonomical levels. Although much effort has been done on its plants by many research workers, yet, numerous genera and species still remain uninvestigated or partially studied. This finding prompted us to carry out a phytochemical study on two Compositous plants namely, cirsiurn syriacum Gaertn. (=Notobasis syriaca L.). (Tribe Cynareae) and Clchorium endivia L. subsp. pumiluin (Jacq.) Cout. (Tribe Lactuceae).
This thesis deals with the chemical investigation of the previously mentioned two plants, wildly growing in Egypt, that have been partially studied before. The study aims to establish the chemical profile of the selected plants and testing their activity against certain micro-organisms. In addition, a preliminary screening of the pharmacological activity of some of the isolated compounds and semi-crude fractions of acl, oriuin endivia L. subsp. purnilum (Jacq.) Cout. was carried out.
This thesis consists of three parts:
Part I: Phytochemical study of cirsium syriacuin Gaertn. (=Notobasis syriaca L.).
Part II: Phytochemical study of Cichoriuin endivia L. subsp. puiniluns (Jacq.) Cout.
Part III: Biological evaluation of some extracts and pure isolates of Girsium syriacum and Giclwriuin endivia L. subsp. puiniluin Chapter I: Antimicrobial activity of some isolates.
Chapter 11: Pharmacological activity of some isolates and crude fractions of Gichoriuin eiidivia L. subsp. puiniluin (Jacq.) Cout.
