Abstract Aim of the work To compare between in vitro fertilization with embryo transfer (IVF-ET) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in treating cases of unexplained infertility. Also, to compare of IVF-ET between cases of unexplained infertility and tubal infertility; and ICSI between cases of unexplained infertility and male infertility. Conclusion Both IVF-ET and ICSI were as successful in cases of unexplained infertility as in the classic indications of these treatment modalities (IVF-ET for tubal factor infertility and ICSI for male factor infertility). However, the success rates were slightly higher in tubal infertility cases reflecting the fact that gamete problems could be an important factor in the etiologist of unexplained infertility. The incidences of fertilization may be slightly higher with ICSI but as a whole the results after conventional IVF-ET and ICSI are comparable. ICSI may avoid the risk of complete fertilization failure. However, we cannot reach the conclusion that ICSI is the answer for all cases of unexplained infertility requiring assisted reproductive technology because ICSI is an invasive procedure and bypasses the natural mechanisms against abnormal embryo development. Moreover, it is more expensive and requires more technical experience and time. |
