Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Dysfunctional uterine bleeding affects about twenty percent of women during their reproductive years particularly postmenarchal and perimenopausal periods. Medical treatment is first line of treatment but is effective only in about fifty percent. Hysterectomy is the definitive treatment although it is 100% effective in treating this DUB but it is a major operation with its morbidity and mortality rather than the cost of the operation and long hospital stay pre- and post-operatively and long convalescence. Hence, the idea to find an alternative to hysterectomy for treatment of DUB not responding to medical treatment. The alternative is endometrial ablation. The principle of endometrial ablation is to moreve or to destruct the whole thickness of the endometrium and the superficial myometrium to ensure complete destruction of the basal endometrial glands responsible for its regeneration. Endometrial Ablation (EA) is not necessarily results in amenorrhea as hysterectomy, it is satisfactory to the patient and the gynecologist to decrease the menstrual blood flow sufficient to avoid hysterectomy. The modern era of endometrial ablation commenced just over 20 years ago with development of several methods of permanent endometrial destruction. The first generation of EA techniques developed.
Objectives: This study aimed at evaluation of the safety and efficacy of using Foley’s catheter balloon in thermal ablation of endometrium for treatment of DUB not responding to medical treatment.
Patients and methods: This study was conducted in Zagazig University, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics during the period from May 2005 to December 2006.
Correct patient selection is essential in producing good results.
