Abstract

Two field experiments were conducted in each of the two
winter seasons1997/1998 and 1998/1999 to study the effect of some
agronomic practices on growth(at different ages), fiber, seed and oil
yields and their qualities of flax Giza 8 cv. In the first experiment,7
N rates with or without organic manuring(FYM and sewage
sludge )and 3 harvesting dates were studied, while in the second
experiment, 3 potassium fertilization levels and four foliar
micronutrients treatments were investigated.
Application of 90 kg mineral N/fad.gave the highest values of
plant height,LA/plant, leaves, stem and total dry weights/plant,
\AR,CGR, technical lengtn.stem diameter.straw and fiber :ields
per plant and per faddan.cellulose % and biological yield per
faddan.Meanwhile application of 60 kg mineral N/fad.resulted the
highest seed yield per plant and per faddan as well as the highest
values of oil and protein contents and this rate of N did not differ
significantly with 90 kg mineral N/fad. concerning the effect on
number of capsules per plant and 1000 seed weight. Organic
manuring with 10m3FYM/fad.had favourable effect on fiber
characteristics(fiber fineness.fiber strength and fiber elongation).
Harvesting at 170 days after sowing gave the highest values for most
of the studied traits.
Most of the studied characteristics responded positively and
significantly to increasing k20 level from 25 up to 50 kg/fad.except
that fiber fineness and fiber strength were negatively affected with
increasing potassium fertilizer levels .FoJiar application of 300 ppm
Zn+300ppm Mn+1S0ppm Cu produced the highest values of
fiber,seed and oil yields and their qualities,but it did not differ
significantly almost with 300ppmZn+300ppm Mn.
Practical Applications:
Application of 60-90 kg mineral N/fad.,50kg k20/fad.and foliar
spraying with 300 ppm Zn+300ppm Mn+ 150ppm Cu as well as
harvesting at 170 days after sowing are recommended for flax Giza
8 production on newly reclaimed sandy soils under Ismailia
Governorate conditions.
