Abstract Introduction: This study was intended to explore the problem of drug abuse among Zagazig university students in order to be able to formulate an action plane for reduction of this new epidemic among adolescents in developing countries. Subject and methode:A representive sample of 1200 Zagazig university students was randomly selected using multistage random technique, All selected subjects were interviewed after getting their informed consent to be enrolled in the study ,each one filled the questionnaire modified from the standard questionnaire of the national centre for social and criminal researches. Result: The result of this study pointed out that mass media and friends represent the main source of knowledge about abused drugs and alcoholics.and the prevalence of smoking among studied sample was (21.3%),prevalence of other abused drugs was (14.3%).the drug commonly abused was bang (12.3%) as a percentage from the total sample followed by hashish(5.2%), depressant (2.7%j,stimulant (1.3%),hal\ucinogens (1.1 %) ,inhalant (0.4%), opium (0.4%) ,cocaine (0.3%) and heroin (0.1 %).also prevalence of alcoholics was( I 0.4%). Students of practical faculties were significantly less abuser than those of theoretical faculties (p<0.05). It was also revealed that drug abuse and drinking alcoholics were significantly more prevalent among males, urban residents, students with high pocket money. The study revealed that the most important risk factors associated with this phenomerron were living away from the family, participation in clubs and participation with peers. |
