A study on a solar pumping unit as advanced technique
was carried out from March to December 2003 at the
Mechanization Branch, Soil and Water Department, Faculty of
Agriculture, Suez-Canal University, Ismailia. A solar module of
75 W was used to operate a small centrifugal pump with 31.3 mm
inlet and outlet orifice diameters and four backward blades, on the
direct current without inverters to reduce the cost of operating.
Batteries of 42 Amp·hr (3 with 14 Amp·hr each) were used to store
the excessive generated power. Investigations were carried out in
the open environment under the direct sunrays, also indoor inside
the controlled solar simulator room.
The investigation aimed to study the following parameters:
• The relationship between the generated current and the
potential difference from the nominal 75 W solar module under
different amounts of the incident solar radiation and/with
different loads (resistances)
• Finding out the suitable external load (resistance) at the solar
module which achieves the highest generated energy at a
certain insolation.
• A simple computer model was driven to calculate the
declination and altitude angles of the sun and the incident solar
radiation on the investigation site and the effect of the module
orientation on the hydraulic generated power.
