Abstract

Trails were carried out to investigate the parameters which affect the sea water desalting using solar energy. The study comprised four different exposure roof configurations, two inclined 20° and 30° stills of one direction (I-20°OD and I-30°OD) and other two inclined 20° and 30° stills of two directions (I-20°TD and I-30°TD) were addressed. The inclined stills with one direction was oriented toward the south as I-20°OD and I-30°OD and toward north as I-20°ODn and I-30°ODn. Meanwhile, the longitudinal axis of the inclined stills with two directions was oriented toward the north south direction. Three steel basins each having gross dimensions of 0.80 m long, 0.50 m wide, 0.10 m high and 2 mm thick were used as an absorber surface. Matt black fiberglass, matt black paint covered with 6 mm glass cover thick and matt black paint only were used as basin absorbing material types. The effect of the previous parameters on the still productivity, still performance in term of its efficiency (η) and coefficient of performance (C.O.P). These investigations were carried out indoors under controlled conditions using solar ray’s simulator, also it verified outdoors under open environmental conditions during the period from the 27th May, 2006 till 26th December, 2007 at the Agricultural Engineering Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Suez Canal University.
The study found that, using the matt black fiberglass as absorbing material for the I-20°ODn configuration produced 0.14 liter/m2. Still productivity increased when the water depth in the basin was decreased. The efficiency of the I-20°ODn configuration under stable water depth of 0.5 cm in the basin and stable simulated rays was found as 14.9, 14.3 and 11.9% for the three different absorbing materials: matt black fiberglass, matt black paint only and matt black paint covered with 6 mm glass cover thick, respectively. The optimum fresh water produced from the I-20°ODn configuration with matt black fiberglass occurred in August; it produced 0.317 liter/m2.day in average.
Key words: Single basin solar still – Parameters affect solar desalting – Passive solar still.
