Abstract This invcstlgntio n was carried out to study the effect of zinc deficient diet on the buccal epithelial cells in rats. Twenty fou r weaned albino rats of weight ranged between 2S -SOgm each, were used in this experiment. They were randomly divided into two groups. Group I (Zinc deficient diet ) of twelve rats were fed purified powder diet containing 0.4 pp m zinc by analysis. Group 2 ( control group) of twelve rats were fed the same diet supplemented with 40 p P m zinc carbonate At each period of time 9,18 and 27 days the rats were scarified and the tissue specimen’s of the buccal muncus membrane oppos!: to ,,’olar teeth were prepared for the light and transmission electronic microscopic ex amlnatlon. Paraffin sections of each specimens were prepared and stained with: 1 : Haematoxylin and Eosin to study the general histological features. 2 : Toluidine blue for staining of mast cells. 3 : Semi thin sections stained with oliviue blue for general orientation of the sections, then ultrn thin sectio,~.s were obtained from selected blocks and examined by electron microscope. The experimental group of rats showed marked reduction in weight gain. Clinically the cxpcrhncntal ruts kept quite, drowsy and excessive falling of hair with patchy areas of alopecia were observed. The histological observation of the buccal mucosa of zinc deficient rats on the level of light microscope revealed increased thickness of the epithelial lining with marked cellular hypertrophy and hyperplasia of prickle and granular cell layers. Increased intercellular spaces with marked intercellular cdcma were observed togcther with vacuolated prickle and granular cells. lnflammntory cells also increased in the lamina propriety with the time of zinc deficiency. |
