Abstract

Cognitive development plays a key role in learning and thinking methods of children. Piaget and Vygotsky offer some incredible insight into the possible ways children learn and by using these theories it is possible to create a more conducive learning environment for each child.
This study presents the Test of Acquired Communicative Skills (TACS) which is an assessment tool composed of three inventories. Inventory I assess the prelinguistic and early communicative skills for children age up to 2 years, and it is composed of three composites (social, symbolic and speech). Inventory II has two components; inventory II receptive and inventory II expressive and they assess language developmental skills for children above 2 years. It has two scoring systems; qualitative and quantitative.
The study was carried on 90 normal children and 93 delayed language developed children, the age ranges from 9 months to 6 years divided into 12 age categories with age interval 3 months from 9 months to 2 years, 6 months from 2 years to 5 years and the last group from 5 to 6 years. The two groups were matched regarding age and sex.
Pilot study was done on 30 normal, 30 delayed language developed children to check test materials, the order of questions and study the reliability and internal consistency of the test. Certain modifications were done to suit the Egyptian culture.
Reliability of the test was proven by test retest method with 2 weeks interval, and through the internal consistency. Validity was proven through content validity, developmental validity, internal consistency, criterion referenced validity and convergent and divergent validity. All methods indicate that the test is valid as a test for communicative skills evaluation.
