Abstract Aim of the work To evaluate the intubating conditions as well as the hemodynamic response to laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation with the use of either propofol alone, propofol with fentanyl or propofol with fentanyl and lignocaine without the use of muscle relaxant in a triad blind study for short surgical procedures. Conclusion Intubation can be done successfully without muscle relaxant with propofol alone, but addition of fentanyl to propofol augmented the attenuating effect of propofol on the pressor response to laryngoscopy and intubation and provides hemodynamic stability with improvement of the intubating conditions. When lignocaine was added to propofol and fentanyl it produced more hemodynamic stability to laryngoscopy and intubation with excellent to good intubating condition and complete abolishment of post-intubation response, as well as pain during injection of propofol. So, propofol, fentanyl and lignocaine provide a simple way for endotracheal intubation without the use of muscle relaxant in cases needed avoidance of the muscle relaxant especially short day case surgery. |
