Abstract Summary The aim of this study is to evaluate analgesia and side effects of caudal neostigmine co-administered with ropivacaine for pediatric genitourinary and lower extremities surgery. Analysis of the results showed that the difference in patient characteristics between the two groups were non significant. As regard heart rate, mean blood pressure and oxygen saturation there was non significant difference between the pre anesthetic value and the subsequent values in the same group. There was no significant difference between the two groups as regards motor block. There was no significant difference between the two groups as regards sedation score in all times of measurements except 2 hours postoperatively, there was a mild significant difference. Our results showed that the degree of post operative pain and post operative analgesic requirements were much less in the group II receiving ropivacaine and neostigmine than in the group I receiving ropivacaine alone. Conclusion Single injection of neostigmine when added to ropivacaine offers an advantages over ropivacaine alone as it reduces the postoperative pain and postoperative analgesic requirements in children undergoing genitourinary and lower extremities surgery with no adverse effect. |
