Abstract

Aim of the work
To review the literature regarding the following:
1- The psychology of perinatal period.
2- The possible etiological and bio-psychological interaction in postpartum psychiatric disorders.
3- Diagnosis of postpartum psychiatric disorders.
4- Treatment of postpartum psychiatric disorders.
5- Impact of postpartum psychiatric disorders on child development.
Conclusion
Child cognitive development in the context of postnatal depression is adversely affected and related to disturbances in the mother-infant interactions. The children of postnatally depressed mothers tend to have insecure attachments at 18 months and the boys show a high level of frank behavioral disturbance at 5 years. Few systemic investigations have been made of the precise nature of the impact of maternal psychoses on the developing child and little is known about either immediate or long term effect.
postpartum psychiatric illness is an underrecognised, undertreated and underresearched area. Research on postpartum psychiatric illness was almost nonexistent for most of the 20th century. Some suggestive leads from the late 19th century were disregarded. Further information and research on the reproductive endocrinology of pregnancy and the postpartum period are warranted to evaluate the etiology and subsequently the management of these disorders.
