Abstract In this thesis, an experimental investigation on the possibil ity of using PC-based electronic delivery valves in the injection system in diesel engines was carried out. With electronic delivery valves, one unit of the injection pump can be used to inject the fuel to the injectors of many engine cylinders. An experimental set-up was built to test the characteristics of the new electronic injection system. In this system, a typical diesel injection pump was modified and a special distribution unit has been designed and constructed to handle the fuel from the pump unit to the electronic del ivery system. The electronic delivery system consists of three solenoid valves, two of them are used to deliver the fuel to two cylinders of the engine and the third valve is used to pass the fuel accumulated in the distribution unit to the fuel tank. Electronic circuits for the computer interface and for driving the solenoid valves were designed and constructed. A control software program was designed and built to control the electronic fuel injection system. The parallel port was chosen in this work to link between the injection software and the electronic hardware section of the present injection system. Injected fuel rate to each engine cylinder IS controlled by controlling the open/close timing of each electronic valve during the fuel injection period of the modified injection pump unit.
