Abstract

The modern progress in the ftelds of signal processing is growing in the direction of using digital techniques. One ofthemosttechnologicalbreakthroughs is the highspeeddigitalsignalprocessors (DSP s). To follow this progrss
the aim of this work is direct to build a development system for TMS32010 DSP inorder t~ be a general supporting tool for designers using this DSP.The thesis consists of five chapters, it presents the following issues :_ Survay for basic difinitions and operations that are commonlyused in the fields of digital signal processing.,_ Survay for fortheavailableDSPsandthedevelopmentsupporting tools supplied by the vendors.
_ Detailed description for the designed and implemented develop- ment system.
_ Design examples to illustrate the capabilities of the introd-uced system.
The introduced system works unde!:’ the control of ”ZX- Spectrummicrocomputer”, The main features of the introduced
system are: _ Recieves analog input signal of level 1 mV (max.), Filters
it to the band (200-3200 c/s), and converts it to8-bit digital samples at a rate of 8000 or 32000 samples/sec •
Converts the processed digital samples into analog signal. - stores 12000~nput samples in the ”ZX-Spectrum”mmicrocomputer, and 12000 intermediat or final outp~t samples. This enables the user to slmulate the algoritm unGer development by a non real-time BASIC program, and to feed it by the stored samples. Also theobtained results can be transmitted to theoutsideworld at a real-time rate” thus the user can investigate his system and make necessa~ modifications before implementing the actual real-time program.- An external RAM of 1k-word is used to store the program under development,so that, the program can beeasilycorrected or altered.- 16-bit Input/Output latches are used to interface ”ZX,Spectrum” microcomputer with the DSP.- It controls theoperation of the TMS32010 by switching ON/OFF its d.c. supply, and by controlling its INT and RESET lines. Also the system feeds the DSP by input samples at a real-time rate- The operation of the TMS32010 is monitored once every samplingperiod, i.e. the ”ZX-Spectrum” microcomputer recieves from the DSP an intermediat or final result.- A crystal of frequency 20 Mc/s is used to excite the TMS32010, and the program RAM has an access time of 35 ns, thus, the DSP operates with its full speed.- The software, the hardwre, and the syn9hronizingtechnique are so designed that the ”ZX-Spectrum”’microcomputer can execute the above duties withi~ 30 ps.!The system was tested by executing an illustrative program that multiplys a real-time input signal by -0.7, andcorrectresults were obtained. Two design examples are presented. The first is a program for Linear DM Codec” and the second is a program for an Adaptive DM Codec. A sampling rate of 32000 samples/sec was Usea. The resul ts were sa tisfactol’y and similar to the results obtained from two BASIC procrams, that were written to simulate theintended real-time programs.
