Abstract Aim of the Work The present study targets the following objectives: 1) Review current and new trends in diagnosis and treatment of autistic spectrum disorders. 2) Revision of the diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) in a sample derived from a local private rehabilitation institute. 3) To study the degree of impairment of mental capacities in autistic children and the mental status of their siblings. Subjects and methods The site of the study was decided to be the Jesuits and Brothers Association For Development day care project (JBAD), in Minia. This foundation is located in the center of Minia city, they offer their services to a large catchment area including both urban and rural Minia districts. Mentally ill children were the object of the center’s attention. The subjects of the current study were devided int two groups Group (1)The autistic children: These were 14 children, supposed to have autism. They were already enlisted in the center’s activities, 12 of them are males and 2 are females. Group (2) The siblings of those autistic children (their number was 28) The following tools and techniques were applied to fulfill the aim of the work: 1-Socio-demographic data sheet.[to group (1) and group (2) ] 2- Clinical psychiatric interview.[ to group (1)] 3-Sheet of pregnancy and birth complications (to be applied with the child parents). 4-Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) [to group (1) and (2)] 5-Stanford Binet scale for intelligence assessmen to group (1) Results and comments: Peri-natal factors In agreement with the previous studies, the incidence of prenatal, natal and postnatal complications in this study was higher in the patient than in the control groups .The natal complications showed the highest percentage ,followed by prenatal complications then postnatal complications among the autistic patients. Among these perinatal complications, tetanus vaccination during pregnancy, gestational hypertension, labour complications and delayed crying were most prevalent. These results indicate consistent association of unfavorable events in pregnancy, delivery,. and the neonatal phase and autism. One of the major findings in this study was the significant difference in the physical (milestones) and cognitive (language) development between the patient and control groups .This was in agreement with the other studies that have focused upon the level of the central nervous system functioning in autism. It was also found that the IQ was significantly negatively correlated to different items of CARS. This means that higher IQ is associated with mild deficits in these items, whereas lower IQ is associated with severe deficits. |
