Abstract This research presents an interactive man-computer planning system, called IPS, which is developed for optimizing the public transport line networks in urban areas. It introduces also the theoretical concepts of the planning system and describes the tasks of its different computer programs. The study demonstrates the application of the proposed computer system to the bus network of Alexandria to investigate the effect of changing the operating conditions on the planning results. Conclusions and recommendations are stated regarding the use of IPS as a feasible planning tool. The thesis lS composed of six chapters: In chapter 1, a general introduction of the subject and the goal of the research is given. Chapter 2 summarizes and discusses the most commonly used methods for optimizing public transport line networks. Chapter 3 introduces three-step process for optimization of public transport line networks. Firstly, the performance measures of the public transport system are defined.
