Abstract

The principle step for distillation column design is to determine the stage and reflux requirements.This was performed by making material and enthalpy balances on each stage.Using the ”Y-X” Diagrams or enthalpy-composition diagrams of the binary system the components of which are to be separted.
The determination was carried out in terms of equilbrium staged in which the liquid and vapour streams leaving the stages are taken to be in equilbrium,and their compositions are determined by the vapor-liquid equilbrium relationships for the system.
Computer programs for correlation of phase equilibrium data were developed.The objective of which are to compute and plot vapor liquid equilbrium for binary systems using minimum experimental informations.
In case of lack of experimental data,the programs make use of mathematical relations to compute the phase equilibrium data as well as some of the pure component properties.
The Equilbrium criterion used in the programs is described by the following equation
