Abstract Thin steel plate elements are widely used in common practice. One of the most important applications for this type of elements is the webs of built-up plate girders. It is a well known fact that the cost of any steel structure is relevant to its weight, which is the main objective of researchers to achieve the minimum material ne~ded to construct a fixed geometry structure. As a trial, the thickness of webs may be reduced to their minimal by the use of vertical and, or, horizontal ribs (stiffeners) where needed. While the majority of researchers are focusing their investigations on rectangular plates subjected to shear or normal loads, only a few of them are dealing with the combined action of types of shear and normal loads acting simultaneously. The problem of ribs rigidity and their arrangement in the combined action of loads has received little attension. The classical analytical solutions of plate problems are limited to elatively simple plate shapes, loads |
