Abstract

This study presents systematic approach for synthesis of cascade refrigeration systems, which combines Fuzzy set theory, HYSYS simulation program and engineering knowledge to produce a systematic procedure capable of solving industrial problems.
The optimal synthesis of the refrigeration configuration is addressed; the approach can be used to make major decision in the conceptual design stage, such as the number of levels, temperature levels .Several case studies are solved using this approach , the approach appears to be faster ,better and more direct.
The previous work in synthesis of refrigeration system is more complicated which combine mathematical programming and many assumptions on the flow rate in the system, the temperature approaches of the heat exchanger and thus does not exclude as many promising designs.
In this approach we simply predict the optimum cascade refrigeration system by few steps .The first is to find all the possible number of stages (intermediate temperature level) for the given system by minimum temperature approach technique (MTAT), we take the maximum number of stages for our study to be ten stages as it’s the highest number of stages in the industrial refrigeration systems.
Then we try to direct HYSYS simulator which is a general design tool for industrial processes to build all number of stages required and calculate the coefficient of performance (COP) and calculate total compressor power and refrigerant flow rate for each refrigeration system. Power cost is also calculated.
At last we use the Fuzzy technique to select the optimum number of stages for the given systems which has the higher (COP), lower compressor power, lower refrigerant flow rate and the lowest cost.
Different case studies of synthesis of cascade refrigeration systems were studied and compared the results with that obtained by that (MTAT).
With the aid of HYSYS simulator version 3.1 using Peng Robinson equation of state, Fuzzy technique and engineering knowledge the following results were attained:
1- A major factor that distinguished between this work and any other one is the simplicity in building the refrigeration system on HYSYS simulation soft.
