Abstract

Theory and practice are the origin of sciences. No useful theory without being practically applied, and no outstanding practice without having a strong theory behind. This thesis is a presentation of the theories and practice of building restoration which is a new field in architecture that the world nowadays is giving a tremendous concern. Although ancient human beings had been restoring their primitive shelters, restoration was not considered as a science until the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is since that time that the debate concerning the validity of restoration originated. This led to initiate this new branch of science that could protect the historical buildings against their haters, and might affirm the necessity of their existence in our cities.
The purpose of this study is not only to profit from what the western culture had improved in this field from the beginning of the nineteenth century till now, but also to try to ”Egyptianize” their theories and methods of practice so that they could be locally applied. The successful introduction of the restoration science to the Egyptian society will be a start up point towards keeping our monuments, and respecting our history. It will also create a new and deep meaning of patriotism.
Therefore, this study will not only introduce the restoration science, but will also establish criteria and new methods that could be applied in some preliminary restoration procedures. Further studies should be considered to keep the field open. Moreover, the new established ”Egyptianization” should be tested and revised to determine their efficiency. In this case, the established criteria and methods of deterioration reporting will be applied to Terbana mosque, a late seventeenth century structure, located at Faran<;a street, Turkish Town, Alexandria.
The first part that consists the first and second chapters of the presented research will introduce theory and practice branches in building restoration. The second part of the thesis, the third and the fourth chapter, is an application of the learned lessons, to Terbana Mosque, Turkish Town, Alexandria (dated to 1684 AC).
