Abstract

A study of the local scour at pile groups was experimentally
investigated. The case of two piles aligned with the flow
direction was established.
The aim of the experimental study is the investigation of the
preferable distance between two bridge piles to reduce local
scour.
Initially local scour was examined for single piles of five
different pile diameters, then, groups of two piles were examined
altering the separation distance between the two piles. The experimental results for each two piles of the same diameter and different spacing in between was related to those of
the single pile. Three main groups of experimental curves represent the maximum local scour of the upstream and the downstream piles related to
the maximum local scour of the single pile, the maximum local scour of the downstream pile related to the maximum local scour of the upstream pile and the maximum local scour of both the
upstream and the downstream pile related to the pile diameter were plotted versus pile separation distance related to the pile diameter. ~nd the downstream pile takes place.
