Abstract

The main objective of the work reported in this thesis is twofold namely, to highlight the significance of fuel <cost in the determination of •ships• operating costs and to conduct the relevant analysis of diesel engine heat losses in order to propose the most beneficial means for energy saving. The work commences in the first chapter by surveying and comparing the various diesel engine propulsion systems of the world merchant fleet. The second chapter reviews the evolution of design of energy saviilg solutions over the last two decades andthe di~ferent actions undertaken in order to save energy on board vessels. The territories for energy saving are categorized in three different trends: Propelling power decrease, higher efficiency of propulsion plantand dissipated energy saving. In what concerns the third chapter, it deals with the potential ~or heat recovery from the cooling system with emphasis on the jacket fresh water cooling system well as the tUl-bocharger scavenging air heat that flows through the air cooler. Various applications for the utilization of recoverable heat are investigated. 2 Emphatic particular concentration is placed on the fresh water generator.Furthermore, the fourth chapter is concerned with shedding light on exhaust gases as being considered the major contributor to engine energy losses. The factors different power turbine affecting reviewed. exhaust gas Th’e ou t line amount of and tempel-ature are systems are discussed. Additionally, the different types of wastean heat boilers together with a listing of the factors affeating boiler selection are surveyed. To proceed, the fifth chapter is concerned with steam production parameters as well as steam appl icat ions in heating purposes and electrical power generation. Nevertheless, the different flow systems of waste heat recovery elements adaptable to engine characteristic andship demands are discussed. Waste heat recovery systems auxiliary diesels are described too. The sixth chapter concentrates on performing experimental measurements for a main engine; the aim being the determination ofthe engine performance, the different ratios for the heat losses and the turbocharger recovery ratio of exhaust gas losses.
