Abstract The use of steel beam-column connections is inhernet in every structural steel building frame. One of the most common types of connections in steel building frame is the rigid corner connection. Although the general principles on which the design of rigid joints is based, are fairly well established, the details of the connecti on offer considerable scope for investigation. However, the cost of fabricated steel construction is controlled to a large extent by the connections. Thus, simplicity of connection details may have a great influence on the total economy of the structure than would a reduction in weight of the main members. The stress distributions in rigid frame corner connection have been investigated in many researchs. But the local buckling of the web, as well as the connection details, have been the subject of fewer researchs. While extensive investigations have been carried out on frame corner connection having an inner curved flange, fewer were dealt with the sharp cornered type. The most common feature of stiffener is to prevent premature failure due to lateral buckling of web. But the effect of its presence in the stress distribution in the connection, was approximatly ignored. |
