Abstract One dimensional wave equation was used to study the pile driveability . An idealization proposed by Smith using the technique of the wave equation was studied A computer program based on Smith’s idealization was implemented . This computer program was used to calculate the pile set and the instantaneous stresses induced in pile driven by a falling hammer . A useful parametric study was concluded , and the effect of different parameters on the number of blows / 100 mm and driving stresses occuring in a precast concrete pile and a close-ended steel pipe pile are examined . A comparison between the driveability of the two types of piles under consideration ( precast concrete pile and close-ended steel pipe pile ) was considered Another model was developed , in which a pile was driven using a vibratory driver. A computer program using Runge - Kutta method was developed and constructed . This computer program was implemented to solve the general equation of motion , describing the response of the pile . A parametric study was concluded and the effect of different carameters concerning the pile and driver characteristics were :,onducted Four vibratory drivers were chosen and thier ability to drive a close-ended steel pipe pile was tested .
