Abstract

The essence of this research is to investigate the successful design of dams and to asses the seismic risk associated with dam failure which rely heavily upon the availability of accurate analytical tools .
The study presented in this thesis is devoted towards the improvement of the present analytical techniques and to enhance understanding of the dynamic behavior of dams reservoir systems during earthquake excitation . Consideration is given to the effects of soil characteristics, effect of boundary conditions and the coupling interaction between dam-water reservoir and foundation .Computer programs were developed to solve the equations of motion of dam-reservoir-foundation systems in time domain and to evaluate the effect of various parameters, including those required to model non- linear behavior of concrete and non-linearity behavior of the material composing the body of the earth dam .
The thesis, organized in eight chapters and four appendices , gives a concise summary of the theory and application of numerical models related to linear and nonlinear analysis of concrete dam-reservoir systems and earth-dam-reservoir systems, and a description of the work associated with the solution of real problems .
The developed computer programs were used for investigating the dynamic response of Sennar, Aswan, and Aswan High Dams on the River Nile, when subjected to earthquake .
A brief introduction highlighting the importance of the study of the dynamic analysis of dam-reservoir-foundation systems under seismic excitation is presented in the first chapter . The second chapter describes the linear analysis of concrete gravity dam-reservoir- foundation systems considering the interaction between the dam and the foundation, the coupling between the dam and the reservoir water, and the reservoir bottom sediments . A review of the previous studies is also, presented . Some modifications to the existing numerical models have been introduced to improve the end zone boundaries . Numerical studies using the developed two dimensional finite element program are presented .
The non-linearity of water behavior in reservoir due to cavitation induced during seismic excitation is presented in chapter three . The effect of this phenomenon on the hydrodynamic response of the system is investigated . The effect of the non-linearity of the concrete material on the dynamic response of the dam-reservoir.
