Abstract The thesis is a trial to apply the techniques o£ .pperations Research to the production o£ ship hull sections. Atter a brie£ introduction to emphasise the importance of planning a project £or building a ship with particular spec- . 1fications, £easible methods £or the production o£ sh~p hull sections are introduced. Topics o£ Operations Research con£ronted with problems dealing with sequencing; resource allocation and decisionmaking are thoroughly explained. Emphasis have been made on solving the combinatorial problem that results £rom optimizing the duration of production in view o£ the available resources. In this respect, the author had to apply the procedures propoaed by Balas and Gorenstein £or solving the sequence and resource problems respectively. Decision-making was then carried out depending on cost evaluation and completion time tor the production o£ ship hull sections~ To illustrate the merits o£ introducing the 6cienti£ic approach o£ planning~ the achieved procedure has been applied to the production o£ [! hull block o£ the bucket deedger”MINA”. |
