Abstract The present research work deals with an investigation of the effect of bridge/vehicle interaction on the dynamic response of bridges. Special emphasis is placed upon the dynamic behavior of multi-span bridges, where the spans are treated as simply supported spans. The analytical model used in this study is based on the interactive solution of the bridge structure together with the moving vehicle in tbe time-domain. A substructuring technique is used to reduce the computational time and effort, and a combined stiffness matrix is developed so as to include both bridge and vehicle models. A review of several existing bridges in Egypt was made, and ”Al-Fangary” bridge was selected as a base for the bridge data to use in this study. A parametric study was performed using the developed analytical model to determine the effect of various factors including the effect of vehicle vibrations resuJting from the consecutive passage of the vehicle on several unconnected spans, in addition to the effect of the upward and downward slopes at the bridge entrance and exit respectively. Other factors, such as vehicle speed, and bridge and vehicle damping effects were also considered. The results obtained were used to develop usefuJ recommendations concerning the expected dynamic amplification for displacements and bending moments acting on the different spans of multispan bridges under the effect of moving vehicles. |
