Abstract

The diffusion weldinS of zircaoly-4 to stainless steel type 304 was studied at the temperature range of 900 to 1000°C, for various diff!ision times. The junc¬tions were reasonably welded at 950°C. The investiga¬tion of the diffusion zone indicated the presence of
or 2 Zr and another unidentified intermetallic phase . probably term,-y Zr-Fe-Ni alloy, in the side of zirco¬nium. In the stainless steel side a ferritic phase was detected, which was created due to the transforma¬tion of the eustenitic steel under the effect of the diffusion of zirconium in this region. It was also found L .
found that Ni and Fe diffused Yrith ’-a fast rates in the zircaloy side of the junction at the tempera¬tures of investigation, while the diffusion of Cr was much slower.
The behaviour of the welded joints under hydrogen gas showed that they had the ability to absorb large quantities of hydrogen at both 300°C and room tempera¬ture. The intermetallic laZrer in the diffusion zone, and most of the zircaloy side, which was enriched with Ni. was transformed to powder, which is probably comp¬lex hydrides.
