Abstract ”his study seeks to explore the consciousness of the current student ltion of modernizing elite in Egypt. The key question is: ”To what has Nasser’s leadership as mediated primarity through the press and iective endeavors in a few institutional spheres shaped the outlook of elite?’1 The institutional spheres highlighted include (a) family, ;pecial reference to population pol icy targeted at overpopulation, and lucation with emphasis on illiterates in the generalpopGlation and on licy illiteracy among the educated. Constraints of societal moderni- 1 were studied at both in”stitutional level, articulated as foreign lement in confl icts, and the personality level, with personal ity viewed ;ystem of behavior, studied within the I imited context of the fahlawi ior mode. This is associated in the 1 iterature wit~ inefficiency and lack of trust in personal and group relations.Dbjective data were collected from the press, particularly the daily and the weekly Rose El-Yussef.
