Abstract This thesis proposesimethod for determining the effective bre¬adth of vibrating stiffened panels, which is mostly needed in dete¬rmining the response of vibrating panels. The thesis describes the application of the orthotropic plate method, the transfer matrix method, and the separated stiffener met,- hod in determining the natural frequencies, mode of vibration and other characteristics such as stress, strain, and bending moment,of rectangular cross-stiffened panels. The panel is considered to be simply supported all a~’ound its edges when n-pplying the orthotropic plate method, while for the other two methods no restrictions were made on longitudinal stiff¬eners, boundary conditions or spacing. The effects of torsional ri¬gidity, shear deflection, and rotary inertia may be included or omi¬tted as desired. The thesis also includes two approaches for determining the response of crov, stiffened panels when subjected to probabilistic exciting forces, and an investigation about reliability and fatigu¬failure of structures during vibration. A case study of a rectangular panel stiffened by (3 x 13) cross-stiffeners is treated by each method, and computer programs are included. The thesis ends with discussions, conclusions and suggestions CD for further work. |
