Abstract

Folded plate structures are always one of the most intere¬sting subjects for both designers and research engineers. Such structures are mainly used as a better way of construction than the ordinary system of frames and beams. Mat because they are lighter in weight and better in appearance. Folded plate struc¬tures have the advantage over similar construction such as cyli¬ndrical shells with their wide variety in shape, economical’ consideration and simpler form works.
The economy of folded plate structures is based on the use of the main structural system as the building inclosure. Because of their inherent stiffness, longer spans may be obtained with folded plates without an increase in material requirement. A-1so, simpler formworks means reduction in the cost and easier con¬creting and screeding.
Folded plates as a method of construction is suitable for bunkers, tanks, channels, auditoriums and industrial buildings.
Folded plate structures are composed of a number of plate elements monolithically joined together in straight lines called fold-lines and supported at two or more ”for continuous structure diaphragms. The diaphragms are so rigid in their plane and flexible normal to their plane.
When more than two plates meet at a fold line the folded plates is called multiple folded plate structure. Fig. (1.1) shows the elements of folded plate structures and some cross-sections of folded and multiple folded plate structures.
