Abstract This investigation is devoted to the extraotion of nuclec~ grade magnesium from sea bittern. It comprises three main parts : The first is pertaining to examine the effect of bittern eVaporation on both its physical and chemioal proper ti es. In a sec ond par t!l! , a brief c ompar, ti v est udy on magn e¬sium extraction from bittern by use )f lime, dolime, solvent extraction and precipitation with ammonia solution and gas as a1$O with ammonia oarbon dioxide gas mixture, has been attempted. The precipitation approach by ammonia-carbon dioxide mixture Was the mean adopted. A oareful systematio examination of various parameters affecting precipitation was undertaken on economic basis • Recovery and purity of magnesium hydroxide, have been taken into acc)unt by the sCudy of magnesium concentration in the bittern, its temperature, flow ~ate of precipitant, etc Since the produced magnesium compound contained 100 ppm of boron, it has to be minimized to less than 1 ppm to agree with the nuclear specifications. !£El-Yamani,I.S., Farah,M.Y., Isaack,S.L., ”High grade magne¬sium from .A..1-Mex (Alexandria) waste bittern”, Abstracts of l~, Conf. Nucl Sciences and Applications, p. 66, Cairo, March 1975. The complete paper has been accepted for publi¬cation as External-Report of Atomio Energy Establishment, Cairo, July 1978. In a third part~, refining of magnesia was aohieved through carbonation of the hydroy~de; the produced oxide was subsequently reduced to the metal. Concerning the carbonation process, stress was made on flow rate of 002’ its superficial velocity, depth of injection, magnesium concentration in the slurry, ••• etc. Reduction of the oxide was re-examined by use of ferro¬silicon and the parameters needing preoise adjustment inc¬luded : temperature, charge composition and ferrosilioon particle size. Nuclear grade magnesium oxide and metal , of oheaper price~,were finally obtained. |
