Abstract River pollution in. Egypt as \’loll as in other count~ ries is a problem that concerns , and needs the cooper¬ation of , different author0ties within community orsan~ ization. Water author~ties , health authorities , river d.S -,.eJ...J... as lnc..u.s’tirlaJ... au’ti’n.or~’tiles CD:e resiJonsl’DJ...e for the well-being and health of river water qualities • Cooperation of such sectors is needed to secure ro1d main¬tain sources of water for the needed and expected quan-ei¬ities , and required qualities for different uses of \”iater. Industries are responsible for contributing much llarra to river water quality through the discharge of liquid industrial wastes , either treatecL or untreated. Pres¬ent legeslations seeL1S to be uneffe ctive , as s OEle :L’1dus¬tries would prefer to pay penalties for polluting water streaus rather than cleaning their wastes , as a result european water authorities suggested new legeslatiolW that cow1tS for the quality of pollutants discharged in a water stream rather than only the quantity of dischar¬Ged Haste s , based on an equivalent Pollutant load (1). Such a scheme would care for the ~ctual quality ~ld quantity of pollutants received by tIle st:. ... eal”J. The collected funds by such a scheme a.:ce used for the er-.cec¬tion of such treatment units for the removal of added pOllutants , as a trial for reservation of the initial l’later quality • Yet in most areas , and by tillle , aGOUi’1ts of pollu¬tants received by water bodies are continuously increas¬ed due to industrial activities , developll1ent , civiliz¬ation needs and development in livinG standards. On the other hand amount of water resources is alraost constant or limited , the outcome of such situation is an inc~--ea¬sing level of pollution in water bodies ( fresh or other¬wise ). .AB a result water bodies are nO’.1 considered as sources of water as well as drains for used water • Industrial planners usually appreciate a site near to water Sources to satisfy their wa~er deTI~nds and to dis¬cllarge their waste into the same water boetr• The out¬COde of such trend is a decrease in the C”iuantity of water running into El. streaIil and deterioratinz quality of the vlc’.ter itself • |
