Abstract The aim of this thesis is to study the behaviour of liquid flow out of a bilged ship tank, as the bil¬ging of a tank in an oil tanker leads to oil pollution with all its knownharmful effects • The Marine Pollution is studied with particular emphasis on the Oil Pollution, its souroes in the sea and its effects on the sea t including tanker op¬erational pollution or accidental pollution due to br>either collision or grounding. I. M 0 • ( Inter ¬governmental Maritime Organisation) requirements in relation to tank arrangement and sizes are also included • As 8 tanker is free to move among Waves t there will be hydrodynamic pressures resulting from the up •. nd down motion in addition to the hydrostatio pressures acting on the bi!ged parts at the tank bottom • br>So t the motion of ships among waves is also studied particularly pitching , heaving and rolling. The flow of liquid from Tertica117 oscillating tanks through bottom opening ( orifi.e ) is examined. The model analys1. and the relations to the full scale are studied • The hydrodynamic and hydrostatic pressures acting on both sides of an opening at the bottom of a Terti¬cally oscillating tank and the net pressure acting on the opening also the nature of discharge are included. Theoretical determination of the oil discharged from a tank breached at bottom is treated by consider¬ing that the tank is in oscillato~ motion in a Tert¬ical plane and gOTerned by the rules of simple harmonic motion • Equations for the acting pressures on bottom br>and the quantity of oil discharged are determined • Por the experimental work a special mechanism was designed and built and was consequently used.
