Abstract

Fibre reinforcement of cement and concrete is not realy a new idea. The use of straw in bricks and hair in mortar preda¬tes the use of conventional portland cement concrete. Nature , too, has provided man with fibre reinforced construction mater¬iala in the form of wood and bamboo. However, excluding the use of asbestos it has been. only within the last 20 years or so, that serious consideration have been given to the use of synthetic fibres to improve the performance of conventional moldable construction materials which include gyp wam plaster, cement paste and concrete). The use of fibres in concrete needs additional requirments both to the mixing and placing of concrete and that of the app¬lication of the material in building and construction indust¬ries.(1)
The addition of fibres to concrete and cement achieves im¬provements in many engineering properties such as, fracture, toughness, fatigue resistance, impact resistance, flexural str ength , dowel resistance, tensile strength.compression and slight increase in The fibres that are currently being investigated as reinf¬orcement can be classified in two types the first is the fibreF with a high modulus of elasticity (wire steel fibres, Asbestos
