Abstract

Sumlnary
The aim of this investigation was to study the vegetative and chemical characters for Balady Selected and Chantenay Red Cored. Also, the volatile oil percentage of herb and root for Balady Selected and Chantenay Red Cored and the volatile oil percentage of seeds of Chantenay Red Cored, Balady Selected and Balady local. This investigation was carried out during 1994/ 1995 and 1995/1996 winter seasons in Mallawi Agricultural Research station EI-Minia governorate, Egypt.
The experimental design was split plot with six replications. Data of the two seasons were combined. The varieties were in the main plots and growth periods were in the sub plots.
The results can be summarized as follow :-
I-Balady selected had heavier weight ”gm” of the whole plant (herb and root per plant) 135 days after sowing than Chantenay Red Cored. Plant weight was 466 gm. in the first season and 442 gm. in the second season for Balady Selected. That of Chantenay Red Cored was 160 gm. in the first season and 148 gm. in the second one.
2-The weight of the root per plant in Balady Selected was higher than inChantenay Red Cored. The best time of harvesting for Balady Selected was 105 days after sowing while this age was 105, 120 and 135 days for Chantenay Red Cored according to the desire of the consumer.
3-The weight of the carrot herb (top) per plant was higher in Balady Selected than that of Chantenay Red Cored, which exhibited a high value 135 days after sowing.
4-The yield of whole plant of carrots per fedan (tons/fed.) in Balady Selected was higher than Chantenay Red Cored and it was increased by increasing the plant age.
5- The total yield of root and herb per feddan of Balady Selected were superior than in Chantenay Red Cored, while the favourable growth period of harvesting was 105 days after sowing for Balady Selected to obtain considerable size perferred by the consumer.
6- The length of carrot root increased by increasing the growth periods. The root length of Balady Selected was 30.3 cm. long 135 days of sowing but that of Chantenay Red Cored was 22.8 cm. in the first season, while the length of the roots in the two varieties was 30.4 cm. and 22.3 cm. in the second season, I”espectively.
7- The length of can-ot herb was increased by increasing the plant age, however the Balady Selected was superior than Chantenay Red Cored in this respect.
8- The whole plant length of Balady Selected approximately was double that of Chantenay Red Cored during the gl”owth period.
9- The diameters of can”ot roots (shoulders, middle and least) of Balady Selected and Chantenay Red Cored varieties were increased by increasing growth period. The diameters of Balady Selected variety were higher than those of Chantenay Red Cored.
10-The Chantenay Red Cored may be considered as a good variety with regared to its small core diameter when compared to the Balady Selected. The core diameter was increased by increasing the plant age.
11- The Balady Selected variety gave high leaves number than Chantenay Red Cored.
12- The dry matter pel”centage in root and tops of Chantenay Red Cored were higher than those of Balady Selected. Also, the dry matter in roots and tops increased by increasing the plant age.
13- The Chantenay Red Cored had high total soluble solids content in the root as compared with Balady Selected.
14-The reducing sugars, non-reducing sugars and total sugars percentages were increased in the roots of Chantenay Red Cored and Balady Selected as the plant age advanced.
15- The anthocyanin pigment content in the I”Oots of Balady Selected was increased by inueasing the plant age.
16- The carotene pigment of Chantenay Red Cored was increased by aging. 17-The volatile oil percentage of carrot fresh herb for Balady Selected and Chantenay Red Cored raised starting from 60 till 90 days after sowing and reached to a maximum value. However it was low at the period from 105 to 135 days after sowing forBalady Selected after that pe.-iod the percentage
slightly fluctuated starting from the age 105 days till the end of experiment. The volatile oil yield of carrot fresh herb in Balady Selected was very higher than Chantenay Red Cored in the all six growth periods.
18- The volatile oil percentage and the volatile oil yield of carrot fresh root of Balady Selected was lower than that of Chantenay Red Cored variety.
19- The volatile oil percentage of carrot seed of Balady Local was higher than that of Chantenay Red Cored and Balady Selected.
Chemical composition of the volatile oil distilled from different parts of carrot ( hubs and roots) for Balady Selected and Chantenay Red Cored and fruits (seeds) of Balady Selected, Chantenay Red Cored and Balady Local by gas liquid chromatography analyses (G-C) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (G-C MS) gave the following results:-
a- In the herb :-
The total components present in Balady Selected were ( 98 compounds), of these compounds (38 compounds) were identified. The major identified compounds were (,B-myrcene (15.14432%), limonen (12.834037%), cis-trans farnesol (8.4039322%), ,B-cal’yophyllene (7.4831692%).

Recommendations :-
1- It may be recommended to cross Balady Selected with Chantenay Red Cored to combine the good characters of Chantenay with the heavy and fast growing roots of Balady Selected.
2- It may be recommended to harvest the herb and root in Balady Selected after 105 days after sowing and getting considerable high value of herb volatile oil yield after 90 days after sowing and considerable volatile oil of root at harvesting stage 105 days after sowing.
3- It may be recommended to harvest herb and root in Chantenay Red Cored starting from 105 days after sowing till 135 days after sowing according to the desire of consumer.
4- It may be recommended the volatile oil of root can be used to some extent instead of the volatile oil of seed. Root oil may result as a by product of root processing (e. g. in jam industry).
5- the volatile oil of herb in Chantenay Red Cored can be used to some extent in place of the volatile oil of seeds because the volatile oil of herb contained carotol which is the major constituent of seed oil
