Abstract presented along with techniques to avoid fadings due to multipa th effects. The effect of refraction on radar beams and its accuracy of coordinates- measurements are presented. Different methods of measuring the ref ractivi tyare presented along with the previous efforts concerning its vertical profiles in other countries. The atmosphere and weather conditions leading to temperature inversions are also presented. The climatology of Mersa Matruh is surveyed. The raw data for the calculations were collected by Mersa Matruh weather station in the period from September 1981 to August 1982.The statistical results of the period under study were compared to the results obtained by using the climatological normals. The results showed that summer has high surface refractivity and high refractivity lapse rates with frequent cases leading to ducting of microwaves. The negative refractivity lapse rates’ cases are rare. The results showed that anarrtoi- ou s propagation. --odes exist in the northern west coast of Egypt due to the fact that it is a transitional area between the Mediterranean warm and humid climatological region and the dry, arid great Aftican desert.
