Abstract A power system stability crisis which is sometimes known as a multimach in multiswing instability is violating system wide. That is the system is in danger of breaking up and separating into two or more isolated islands so me of which will not be viable and cannot continue operation without severe loss of load or even blackout. The critical time period in ab emergency ranges from 2 to 3 seconds after the disturbance and hence for effective control, the information is needed in about 10 miliseconds after each measurement of the variations. The frequency of the oscillation ranges from 0.05 to3 Hz.Thus the control must act on a fractional second time-scale.This situation effectively rules out centralized or even hierarchical dynamic computer control based on a full system model and leaves the challenging task of using local information to achieve system wide stabilization. |
